Has Our Society Become Completely Self-absorbed?
I’ve been all over the world and feel like I have experienced enough in life that it somewhat saddens me that I have come to the conclusion that we as humans and a society have become extremely self-absorbed. The one thing that I cannot figure out though is that if this behavior is conscious, which would mean we are inconsiderate, or if it is unconscious, which would mean we are just ignorant… or perhaps it is a little of both? A few examples that I’m sure we have all seen are: - Someone holds the door open for someone and the other person doesn’t even acknowledge the courtesy that has just been given to them. - Someone is walking in a parking lot directly in the middle of the road while there is a car behind them and doesn’t move over to give the person in the car space to pass. I could go on and on with examples, but you can get the point from those. Now in both of those examples, the actions of the person not thanking or moving to the side of the other people are clearly rude and inconsiderate. The reasoning of their actions though in my mind is that the people are just ignorant of everything else around them rather than just being flat out rude.Quite frankly though, I don’t know what would be worse. From everything that I have seen and read about the past, we as a society did not used to be like this.
